Description:
This advanced studio investigates translation as a critical, material, and cultural practice. Working across language and typography, medium and technology, and personal and public contexts, students engage translation as a non-linear process of generative reciprocity—where meaning shifts, expands, and transforms. Situated within the international hub of San Francisco, the course connects students with practitioners working across multilingual texts and urban spaces shaped by cultural exchange. Hands-on access to CCA’s shops and making spaces enables inquiry into how ideas transform as they move between media—and how mistranslation can operate as a site of experimentation. Students will develop projects for book fairs, exhibitions, and audiences beyond the classroom, translating personal studio inquiry into environments of public exchange.
