Description:

Advanced Design Studios support the complex and expanding role of today's Graphic Designer. These studios provide deep exploration within a specific arena to help students further define their own methodologies. Courses are proposed by faculty and cover 2D, 3D, and 4D categories. Studio options may vary from semester to semester

This studio will explore the critical role that design plays in health, healthcare, and disability. In the wake of the COVID pandemic and subsequent mental health crisis, it’s painfully clear we need to use design to transform our healthcare to be more empathetic, effective, and inclusive. We will explore design at different scales: from small medical products to connected services, and finally to public health interventions. After a series of small projects to build skills and domain knowledge, students will focus on a health challenge of their choice. We will research the health challenge deeply, talk to the affected people, prototype ideas, and design solutions. This is an interdisciplinary studio. While we will broadly focus on interaction and graphic design, we will not limit the possible design solutions. We will work both in teams and individually. Our goal is to give you the context, skills, and insights you need to work with a hospital, medical device maker, or digital health company.
