In this team-taught course, you will dive into the fascinating world of art from the late 18th century to the present, exploring how the concept of “the artist” has evolved in recent history. Through engaging lectures, hands-on activities, and creative assignments, you will examine the profound transformations that have shaped contemporary culture, including mechanized industry, urbanization, individual expression, political pluralism, the avant-garde, globalization, and digital culture. You will develop essential skills in critical thinking, visual analysis, and both written and oral communication while studying the interconnected histories of modern visual culture, such as painting, sculpture, architecture, design, photography, comics, textiles, film, and video. Designed for second-semester first-year students eager to challenge conventions and explore the vibrant scope of contemporary culture, this course aims to inspire your curiosity and spark your artistic passions.
