Description:
This course examines the history and culture associated with the unjust incarceration of Japanese Americans during the Second World War. Students will learn about this disturbing period in U.S. history through in class lectures, seminar-style discussions with each other and visiting experts, as well was field trips to historic sites. We will focus on the material culture and art of incarceration, but also look at architecture, urban planning, painting, film, and other cultural forms produced during and after the period of incarceration. The final project will involve having a student produce a work of art, essay, literature, or other form of representation that captures the experience of incarceration during the war.
