Description:
Water Media for Illustration focuses on the practice and development of two media: ink and watercolor (transparent and opaque). The course is divided into two sections, each exploring application, media, and technique in the medium. In the ink section, students learn how to use ink with pen, quill, and brush. Various ink media are also introduced, including India Ink, dye and pigment based ink, and liquid acrylics. Some techniques featured are: cross hatching, silhouettes, flat shading, feathering, and inkwash. In the watercolor portion of the class, students learn how to create watercolor washes, gradients, and blending, as well as building up values and perfecting detail. An assortment of watercolor media is also introduced, including watercolor dyes and opaque watercolor (or gouache). Various masking techniques and brush techniques are demonstrated. Additionally, the class explores different paper types from cold press watercolor paper to hot press Bristol, and brush types from natural hair to synthetic. Technique is the main focus of all lessons and exercises. Each class concentrates on a specific ink or watercolor technique. Students are required to complete a series of weekly illustrations demonstrating technique and application.
