Description:
This course is designed to cover the basic principles, concepts, and techniques involved in painting representationally from observation or reference. Subject matter will include still life, landscape, interiors, and portraits. This course will focus on the development of foundational skills through rigorous exercises and painting studies. Formal skills such as setting up a palette, color mixing, expressive brushwork, etc. will be covered. Risk taking will be encouraged and the process of seeing/painting will be equal to, if not more important than the final product. Establishing a daily painting practice will be encouraged to build on these foundational skills. Students can expect to paint many smaller paintings with only a few key lengthier fully developed pieces. The emphasis will be placed on developing a rich visual vocabulary, enabling the student to express their creative vision with more confidence and clarity.Hybrid course sections will be delivered both in-person and online. Online portions will be delivered with both asynchronous and synchronous components that will be outlined in the course syllabus.
