Description:
It has been suggested that humanity has entered into a "Fourth Industrial Revolution." Whereas the revolutions associated with steam power, electricity, and the computer affected every industry, we have now embarked upon a path seems destined to permanently erase the boundaries between the physical, the digital, and the biological. What has been the response of designers to the first three industrial revolutions, and how should we position ourselves to deal with the fourth? In the first part of this course we will review the growth of modern technology from the 18th century to the 20th through the ideas and projects of major designers and schools of design. In the second part of the course we will focus on the relevance of design to emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, blockchain, genetic editing, autonomous vehicles, and mobile communications.
