Description:
This course is part of ENGAGE at CCA, a program of the Center for Art and Public Life. ENGAGE at CCA is a community-engagement program that partners students with local organizations, allowing students to apply critical and creative skills toward real-world projects. This is an advanced course on community engagement. Poverty and homelessness are common occurrences in urban areas and particularly challenging issues in San Francisco. For this section of ID5: Context, we will be working with CCA Engage partner St. Anthony's Foundation in the Tenderloin neighborhood. The class will start with volunteer days incorporating discussions with guests and the dedicated staff that assists them with food, counseling, medicine, and other fundamental services. The next step will be identifying needs for this community and proposing solutions to address the range of issues where design can make an impact. Emphasis will be placed on feedback from guests and staff in order to refine design approaches and address challenges for the population. This class will be a unique opportunity for students to interact directly with an underserved population in a safe and meaningful way.
