Description:
Maps, charts, diagrams, infographics, and graphs are all a part of our everyday lives, whether they be interactive, digital, physical, or existing simply in our memories. In this class, we will explore multiple information-design methods, starting with traditional physical maps and diagrams. Then we will explore how layers of information can be used to describe a space or place through visual infographics. Next up, we’ll explore how journeys can be pictorally communicated in both graphic and UX design. And, finally, we’ll explore how experiences can be communicated through graphical means. We will discuss and critique examples of pictoral maps and information graphics throughout history as a way to explore our choices as designers in communicating complex information in simple, inspiring ways. Projects will be primarily 2-D/Graphic Design challenges, with more 4-D/Interactive Design elements integrated as we progress through the semester. Students will have the opportunity to explore mapping in its most basic sense as a wayfinding or explanatory tool and apply their new knowledge to projects such as:
- Mapping out the human experience of a physical space
- Mapping a person’s emotional journey
- Communicating large amounts of explanatory information on a single screen or page
- Mapping using technologies such as voice activation and AI
- Addressing equity and differing abilities through maps and diagrams
