Description:
This course explores the design of systems, both manmade and natural. The design of systems is about mapping the flow of interactions and context, exploring the possible inputs and outputs and crafting a design response that is useful, appropriate and robust. It includes the ability to model complex ecosystems and de-sign for multifactor experiences (including physical and digital spaces, information, searching, modeling data, and wayfinding, as well as “unknowables.”) Students learn to visualize and articulate both simple and complex systems through the process of making models and visualizing connections and relationships. They also learn how to evaluate and analyze the success of a system to achieve its intended goals and to identify opportunities for change. Finally, students model complex ecosystems and define leverage points within the system and apply that thinking to a variety of projects. Standard formats and tools such as universal modeling language, flows, wireframes, information architecture and graphical mapping will also be addressed.
