Description:

In Core IxD: Systems, students analyze complex systems, both natural and human-made, in order to make sense of system organization, relationships, and behavior. Systems thinking techniques include modeling with maps and diagrams, scoping, archetypes, and leverage points used to affect change in a system. Examples from industry, government, biology, and current events will be used. Students will participate in weekly student-led games that help them feel how elements of a system behave. In addition, in this course students explore information architecture, an essential discipline designers use to enable their customers to make sense of complex systems. In parallel, they will learn the fundamentals of data structures and information flow in digital applications. Students will also be introduced to wayfinding and placemaking concepts in both the real world and online. Projects include systems diagrams, wayfinding designs, an e-commerce system, and an analysis of an existing large system with a proposal to improve its behavior.
