Description:

In this class we’ll examine how behaviors are shaped by environment, culture, perception, ability, and emotion. And politics, power, and agency. And race, gender, and status. And cognition and empathy.
The most important goal of this course is to help the designer, understand the influence they wield on human brains and behavior. We’ll discuss software addiction, dark patterns, and racist AIs. We’ll explore how (and if) we can use our power ethically. By the end of this course, students will be equipped to question not just what behaviors a system affords, but also how those behaviors are encouraged (or not), for whom, and in what circumstances?
This course will require reading, deep thinking, and thoughtful discussion — but we will also focus on making, collaborating, and experimenting. Students will practice behavior design processes and principles through hands-on individual and group activities. We’ll apply what we learn to behavior change interventions in the real world — including changing our own daily habits!
