Description:
How can we design experiences that surround, engage, and move people, taking their imaginations and emotions beyond the confines of small screens? This studio course introduces students to the emerging field of immersive experience design, where storytelling, spatial design, and interactive technology converge to create environments that invite deep emotional and sensory engagement.
Students will explore the principles of spatial storytelling, multisensory interaction, and embodied presence, learning how to choreograph attention, emotion, and meaning across physical and digital dimensions. Through discussions, hands-on prototyping, and visits from industry experts, the class investigates how light, sound, movement, and narrative can transform physical space into a dynamic environment.
Over the semester, students will work individually and collaboratively to design, prototype, and document an immersive environment, using tools that include projection mapping and spatialized audio. The course emphasizes conceptual thinking, technical experimentation, and critical reflection on the cultural and ethical implications of immersive media.
Students will also have access to CCA’s new Immersive Studio - a specially designed space for projection mapping and spatial audio.
This is an interdisciplinary course. The Professor encourages students from all disciplines, including iXD. The course is open to all Junior level students and above.
