Description:
In these cross-disciplinary studios we explore the different materials, advanced topics, and domains that Interaction Design might involve. To the different disciplines we bring a method of application and the material of time design and the memory and interactivity of technology. Courses in this studio can be fulfilled by a variety of options including cross-listed courses with other departments, Engage studios, or an emerging topic defined by a faculty member, sponsored studio or other elective submitted by the student and approved by the program chair.
From the “Green New Deal” to managing businesses in more sustainable ways, there is much talk about the critical issue of sustainability. As our climate changes before our eyes, many are eager to achieve carbon neutrality. What can groups and individuals do now? Specifically, what can designers and artists do to bring about immediate change? IxD 350 Sustainability Impact Studio engages you hands-on with real world sites in San Francisco, to integrate sustainability into their practice [sustainability as defined by the UN's 17 sustainability development goals]. Your work through inventive engagement with community sites and the creation of “sustainability audits” will help these sites both understand and achieve change, specific to their needs and resources. To understand the site's needs, you will be immersed in the work and operations of these sites, applying the tools you will be learning in the studio. You also will receive training to achieve the credential of being a LEED Green Associate. Along the way, you will be exposed to materials in demography, art, science, anthropology, psychology, and philosophy. A secondary aspect of the semester is that you will develop your own worldview in how you want to be a change-maker as an artist or designer.
