Description:

Acoustics Objects will focus on the intersection between the science of acoustics, and the aesthetics of design development.  We will explore a wide variety of potential object, design and product applications, targeted around the theme of acoustics, sounds and the experience of hearing.Through the course of the semester students will learn the fundamentals of acoustic theory, electronic wiring, and fabrication techniques, specific to creating their own fully functioning sound making objects.  This is a hands-on making focused class, where we will build and test our theories in functional prototypes and finished objects.  We will examine the intersection of high performance and high design in the development of well crafted and well considered objects and designs. There will be special attention paid to experimentation and iterative development of our concepts.  We will explore this through functional prototypes of the mechanics, as well as presentation and refinement of the aesthetic direction we are presenting in our forms. This class is an investigation into and a celebration of objects that we experience with our eyes, hands and ears.Students should have a foundation in building skills.  This is a shops focused class.  ModelMaking, Intro to Furniture, or equivalent course is required.
