Description:
It has been a long time since the West realized that some of the most interesting art and literature comes from places not included in its official canon. These days, it is not uncommon for working writers and filmmakers from around the world to look toward East Asia and acknowledge some of their most meaningful influences. From Akira Kurosawa to Bong Joon-ho, and from Yu Hua to Han Kang, what these artists from Asia tell us about the human experience extends far beyond their borders.
In this upper-division seminar, we will explore films and novels crafted by writers and filmmakers from South Korea, Japan, and China in order to acquire a general understanding of some of the most meaningful aspects of their craft and their unique points of view. Due to time constraints, we will focus exclusively on these three countries.
Trigger Warning: Some material in this course depicts images and language that may include animal cruelty, gore, and sexual violence. Please do not enroll in this class if you have strong sensitivities to graphic narratives.
