Description:

LITPA 2000 courses introduce students to the study of literature or the performing arts, emphasizing analysis of both particular works and of the range of genres, periods and traditions. Frequent reading and writing assignments will be made.COURSE DESCRIPTIONReading the news is a daily ritual for billions of people around the globe, yet it’s something we should never take for granted. Reporters hold challenging jobs as tellers of truth—the bigger the exposé, the higher the risk. And yet honest news is essential for the public health of a democracy. This class highlights the importance of journalism in the United States, including “flashbulb memory” moments when courageous reportage changed our nation’s history. We’ll explore the purpose, art, and craft of nonfiction news through a variety of media and genres. Students will learn to evaluate the reliability of a source through enhanced critical thinking and media literacy. Students will also practice interview, research, writing, revising, and editing techniques as they put theory into practice. Students will model traditional and contemporary journalistic forms, including articles, photo essays, vlogs, and podcasts. Overall students will write 30+ double-spaced pages (or 7,500 words), including lower-stakes weekly assignments, a baseline CCA requirement for this class. Students will produce 10 double-spaced pages (or 2,500 words) of analytical thesis-driven essay(s) within 14-16 total pages of revised and edited writing. Students will also engage in structured discussions via Zoom and Moodle while contributing to a vibrant community of thinkers. Bring intellectual curiosity and a passion for honest documentation or sincere expression.
