Description:
How do stories and threads stitch us together? In this class, we’ll study how we are woven into family, community, and selves by reading the work of Cecilia Vicuna, Ruperta Bautista, Esmé Weijun Wang, Megan Sweeney, and Tiya MIles who teaches us that cloth “symbolically represents our own bodies, our temporal lifelines, and our social ties to one another.” We will turn to the work of artists such as Faith Ringgold, Kimsooja, and Benvenuto Chavajay and ask: How do objects like quilts and cloths tell stories, hold knowledge, and make meaning?
