Description:

LITPA-200 introduces students to the study of literature or the performing arts, emphasizing analysis of both particular works and of the range of genres, periods and traditions. Frequent reading and writing assignments will be made.Section Description:This course will investigate the origins, evolution and contesting definitions and parameters of the genre of young adult literature (aka adolescent literature, juvenile literature.) We will examine issues relevant to the writing, reading and marketing of young adult literature, including censorship, ethnicity, gender and sexuality. We will also observe contemporary young adult culture found in other forms of media. Potential readings will include Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak, Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Jacqueline Woodson's Brown Girl Dreaming, and Gene Yang's American Born Chinese. This course is part of the ENGAGE at CCA program. ENGAGE courses partner students with organizations to identify and address a specific need, allowing students to apply critical, creative problem solving toward real-world resolutions. ENGAGE is a program of the Center for Art and Public Life at CCA.
