Kurt Pelzer: MAAD HTX ProgramProject Title:From Environment to Cosmopolitics: Locating Sibyl Moholy-Nagy’s Theory and Pedagogy of ArchitectureObjectives:
- Contextualize Sibyl Moholy-Nagy’s contributions to architectural theory and pedagogy, specifically as it relates to environmental design, from 1945 -1970
- Assess the formulation of the environment, ecology, and practical techno-sciences within the Bauhaus curriculum and their development post-Bauhaus
- Position Sibyl Moholy-Nagy as both critic and interlocutor of the Bauhaus in America and elsewhere
- Logically construct the connections and developments between vernacular modernism, urbanistic pluralism and lastly Moholy-Nagy’s politics of the cosmos
- Critically appraise contemporary cosmopolitical design and the engagement of Stengers, Latour, and other thinkers in this discourse.
- Comprehensively review and index Sibyl Moholy-Nagy’s writing, notes, and correspondences using relevant digital historian tools
- Participate in deeply engage writing and research to culminate in a thesis, book manuscript, or published writing
- Consider a re-staging of the 1940 Summer Sessions featuring Laszlo Moholy Nagy and the Bauhaus at Mills College, Oakland, California.
- Consider the effectiveness of organizing an exhibition to present materials and documents, and curatorial strategies to visually develop and enrich thesis ideas.
