Description:

Design Media 1 introduces students to the conventions of architectural media and representation. The course builds two parallel, complimentary tracks. First: the fundamental technical skills required to produce clear work fit for architectural conversation. Second: the critical, cultural, and historical context which surrounds these conventions, an understanding of which is essential for students to appropriately position their own work within larger disciplinary conversations. Students will learn to simultaneously approach “drawing” (as a practice of active design), “a drawing” (as a semi-autonomous artifact which may point towards new design possibilities), and “the drawing” (a loaded concept heavy with disciplinary baggage). A rigorous understanding of the complex interplay between these meanings is a vital skill for any architect. This course emphasizes a critical approach to the formats and processes embedded within each form of media explored.
