Description:
The Special Techniques courses help students to deepen their understanding of a specific subject matter or technique related to the field of Metalsmithing and Jewelry. Students make multiple studies and are encouraged to experiment with the technique at hand. The Jewelry/Metal Arts program offers four different Special Technique courses which rotate every other year and by demand. The courses are: Casting, Color on Metal, Holloware, and Production. Section Description: Smithing techniques, the most versatile metals processes in ancient and modern times, combine the greatest variety of visual form, scale, and function. This special course will focus on the process of forging (shaping linear elements), raising (creating three-dimensional forms from sheet), and anticlastic forming (creating linear, eccentric hollow forms). Design and application for jewelry, sculpture, and functional objects will be emphasized.Hybrid course sections will be delivered both online and in-person. Required online synchronous meeting times are listed as the meeting pattern for this course section. Additional course components will be delivered asynchronously or in-person as outlined in the syllabus.
