Description:
The Special Techniques courses help students to deepen their understanding of a specific subject matter or technique related to the field of Metalsmithing and Jewelry. Students make multiple studies and are encouraged to experiment with the technique at hand. The Jewelry/Metal Arts program offers four different Special Technique courses which rotate every other year and by demand. The courses are: Casting, Color on Metal, Holloware, and Production.Metal has the amazing ability to stretch, bend, and move in unexpected ways. With practice on samples, this technical course shows students the malleability of metal and gives them the skills to transform sheet metal into complex dynamic forms. We will explore organic and architectural forms to create jewelry and sculptural objects. We will be investigating California Native plants as part of our research for the course. No prior metal experience is needed. Students can use this course as an elective for any major.
