Description:
The ultimate forces for human conflict and cooperation are addressed and contested at the global level. This course calls on the discipline of international relations theory and practice (IR) to clarify ways in which critical themes of world politics such as health, environment, crime and human rights are addressed. Utilizing mainly perspectives drawn from the one unquestioned superpower today, the United States of America, the course studies the role of multinational corporations, international organizations, and international law, as well as ethical forces such as transnational environmentalism at play. From traditional tools of diplomacy and interstate adjudication to modern means available through social media and solidarity movements, the course also envisages possible solutions and alleviations of the human condition.Philosophy and Critical Theory (PHCRT) courses focus on developing critical reading and thinking skills, with an emphasis on learning to frame and explore meaningful questions. Students consider multiple perspectives and claims in the process of formulating independent, well-founded opinions.
