Description:

What is critical for your survival here and now? And what is the role of art? We will explore the promises and problems of image making through interdisciplinary experimentation that includes music, food, and action. A Sense of Survival is rooted in the history of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense who created over sixty community survival programs that relied on the work of artists, musicians, writers, and photographers. What was the role of art and imagination in this and other social movements? How did these social movements activate community and public space? Through coursework and field trips, this course will culminate in a final project that creatively supports our survival.
