Description:
The development of photography was incredibly experimental and varied. Artist-chemists explored a number of materials and processes to arrive at our contemporary version of analogue photography. Images from this history and their processes can be elusive and ephemeral, but provide the photographer with an expanded field in which to explore both image making and meaning creation. This course will prepare students to successfully engage with a variety of alternative and historic photographic processes. Students will learn proper film negative preparation and management, how to properly and safely mix and apply light sensitive chemicals to appropriate substrates and how to measure for and successfully expose their prints. Potential processes covered include: Digital film negative preparation, toning processes, Anthotype, Cyanotype and Van Dyke Brown, Salt Prints, Collodion process (Ambrotype, Tintype) and more. This class is primarily reserved for advanced photo majors with the required prerequisites, but exceptions can be made at the discretion of the chair and instructor. This class would pair well with PRINT 2320-1/3320-1 Papermaking.
