Description:

This studio course will explore the making of 2d art objects composed of multiple materials/images that unify into a single work of art. The title “Hot Glue” refers to an artist's provisional attachment of one item to another creating a collage. Contemporary artists like Elliott Hundley and Michelene Thomas use a variety of methodologies to create works that bridge mediums less typically associated with each other. We will also consider historical reference points such as Romare Bearden, Hannah Hock and Martha Rossler, among others. We will explore artists and histories and examine physical and conceptual content through the pairings of imagery, material and its assembly. This course is designed to appeal to artmakers whose practice is primarily 2D, e.g. Painting, Photography and Printmedia. Students will explore how traditional modes of work, i.e. painting or analog photography, can be augmented or transformed through material diversity and collage methodologies. Simultaneously, we will acknowledge the complexity of understanding surrounding the meaning of the materials we use whether they be natural, synthetic or conceptual.
