Description:
After a long period of critical neglect in which the clichéd phrase “painting is dead” became an art-world mantra, painting seems to have returned with a vengeance of late. But what, precisely, does it mean to speak of—and practice—painting in the twenty-first century, when the broader art landscape has been characterized by a “post-medium condition” for decades? This course will explore some of the most pressing questions facing painters today, including asking what it means to discuss, and identify with, the medium-specific term “painting.” Centered around familiarizing students with current tendencies and practitioners, and focusing on some of the theoretical positions that inform their practice, this course will place these in the context of recent discourses around painting. The course will be reading and presentation intensive, and may be peppered with visits to local exhibitions during class time.
