Description:

This open-media studio workshop explores the expressive and conceptual possibilities of scale in contemporary drawing. Students will investigate how the size of an artwork affects its meaning, materiality, and viewer relationship. Beginning with a focused series of small drawings, the course progressively expands toward monumental works that challenge physical and spatial conventions. Through hands-on projects in mixed media, students will integrate collage, transfer, and material experimentation. Discussions and critiques will emphasize how artists use scale to create intimacy, tension, or spectacle. The class will reference historical and contemporary examples—from miniature manuscript illuminations to large-scale wall drawings and installations. Technical demonstrations will support both traditional and unconventional mark-making practices. Students will document process and reflection throughout. The course culminates in a self-directed final project that synthesizes personal interests with scale awareness. No previous large-format experience is required, but curiosity and a willingness to experiment are essential.
