Description:
Print Media History: Curatorial Practices in PrintmediaThis project-based class brings together Print history and archival work, with curatorial mentorship and a great opportunity to build your CV and professional practice! The seminar surveys the historical evolution and contemporary expressions of etching, lithography, relief, monotype/monoprint, screen print, digital, artists' books, and papermaking. This seminar in Media History focuses on the critical context for writing about and curating print works by working with CCA’s Hamaguchi Print Collection and visiting noted Bay Area collections. Students will develop personal and collaborative research to understand the global flow of images and text through the invention and proliferation of paper, ink, movable type and various forms of print. Conservation, preservation, and issues surrounding public presentation will also be explored. This class prioritizes hands-on learning through viewing prints in various Bay Area collections, studio visits with artists and professional print studios, and applying this knowledge to curating and installing a thematic exhibition. The exhibition will be presented by CCA Exhibitions in the Campus Gallery. Required for all Printmedia majors, and open to students from any program with an interest in professional curatorial and critical practices with works on paper. Contact Professor Black for approvals to substitute this class for other required classes.
