Description:
Humans are attracted to symmetry in nature-in plants, animals, landforms and more. Humans like to create symmetry, in architecture, design, crafts, movement, music. In this class, we will experiment with several types of symmetry patterns that occur in nature and design, to understand how mathematicians look at symmetry, and how that is similar to and different from an artist's or designer's view. Concepts will be introduced through lectures, videos, a classroom "MathLab," and field trips, as well as explored beyond classtime through reading, observation, construction of patterns, and analysis of patterns through the language of mathematics.
