Description:
An estimated one-third of all global carbon emissions come from agricultural systems, which produce much of the food and fiber on which society depends. Since carbon emissions are responsible for global warming, this implies that though agriculture can’t solve global warming alone, it will be an essential and necessary part of the solution. In this course, students will apply a scientific lens to understanding farming, food, and fiber systems, and the potential for agriculture to contribute to reversing climate change through regenerative and restorative farming practices. Students will learn fundamentals of soil science, crop science, ecology, and climate science, and apply these concepts to exploring the redesign of our food and fiber systems, along with opportunities for artists and designers to engage in applicable hands-on projects.Science and Math (SCIMA) courses develop students' capacity for evidence-based reasoning through the study of life, earth, and physical sciences and of computational and theoretical mathematics. In these courses, students learn to recognize and interpret meaningful patterns of information; to assess the validity of empirical claims, distinguishing between opinion and fact; and to understand the sociocultural relevance of scientific and mathematical thinking.
