Description:
In this class, we'll explore electronics and programming by prototyping robots and interactive kinetic sculptures using the Arduino microcontroller platform. No prior programming or electronics experience is necessary. We'll program our projects in Python, a beginner-friendly programming language used throughout industry, and power them with Arduino-compatible ESP32 wireless microcontrollers, allowing us to connect them to WiFi networks and command them from our laptops and phones. This is a hands-on course, with roughly two-thirds of the class devoted to workshop time. Throughout the course, you'll begin to develop the skills and tools necessary to incorporate electronics and interactivity into your own kinetic artwork. Science and Math (SCIMA) courses develop students' capacity for evidence-based reasoning through the study of life, earth, and physical sciences and of computational and theoretical mathematics. In these courses, students learn to recognize and interpret meaningful patterns of information; to assess the validity of empirical claims, distinguishing between opinion and fact; and to understand the sociocultural relevance of scientific and mathematical thinking.
