Metal fabrication is an integral part of the modern world. The practice of welding is used in numerous disciplines such as landscape architecture, industrial design, furniture and construction - professions that relate directly to the practice of sculpture. From bicycles frames to bridges, metal and its processes are used on a daily basis to create all types of products and structures. This course is designed to familiarize the student with many aspects of ferrous and non-ferrous metal technology. The class emphasis will be on building concepts and creating sculptural works of art while developing skills working with and fabricating metal. The course will include gas and electric welding, metal cutting, surfaces, forging and blacksmithing, cold and hot metal forming, bending and fastening. The course will also include an introduction to basic machine tools and metal sand casting. Students are encouraged to work in mixed media by combining other materials and process with metal techniques.
