Description:
In this hands-on studio course, you’ll dive into the world of metal sculpture by learning to weld, cut, bend, and shape metal into expressive works of art. From scrap steel to polished aluminum, you’ll explore how raw industrial materials can carry rhythm, movement, and meaning. Projects will challenge you to think big, experiment boldly, and develop your own sculptural voice. In addition to an introduction to basic machine tools, this course will include gas and electric welding, metal cutting, surfaces, metal sand casting, forging and blacksmithing, cold and hot metal forming, bending and fastening. Students are encouraged to work in mixed media by combining other materials and processes with metal techniques to spark their creative visions to life. Historical and contemporary examples of metalwork will provide inspiration and context, highlighting both aesthetic traditions and experimental approaches. Safety procedures and tool use are covered in detail, and no prior experience with metalworking is required.
