Description:

In this final Sculpture course at CCA, we will consider endings not simply as conclusions, but as moments of transformation, inheritance, and possibility. The course begins with an extraordinary collection of old molds inherited from a recently deceased Bay Area mold maker and preserved by Douglas & Sturgess—molds of animals, mythological figures, bodies, decorative forms, and other fragments from another maker’s lifetime of work. Students will explore this archive not simply as a collection of objects, but as forms passed from one maker to another, available to be reused, altered, combined, and transformed.Students will use these inherited forms as raw material for creating new hybrid sculptures, combining human, animal, mythological, and imagined bodies while experimenting with mold-making, casting, assemblage, armature building, and sculptural fabrication.Donna Haraway’s “The Camille Stories: Children of Compost,” the final chapter of Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene, will provide a conceptual point of departure as we think about adaptation, interspecies kinship, ecological and societal change, survival, and the new forms of life and relationships that might emerge from a profoundly changing world.Through the creation of sculptural forms and the manipulation of Earthly materials, this course asks: What do we inherit? What do we carry forward? What must change? How do we adapt? What new forms can emerge from the remains of what came before?
