Description:

Casting, as an integral component of the sculptural process, covers a wide breadth of mediums, processes and concepts. The word expanded is used to portray the range of casting from traditional to contemporary conceptual ideas, both physical and non-physical. The field of casting encompasses time, movement, imprinting, shape alteration, repetition and the transition of one material to another. It can be solid, liquid or somewhere in between. The emphasis of this course will be on the exploration of the more ephemeral and conceptual aspects of casting. Students will be encouraged to experiment with the more non-traditional methods of casting and to introduce these concepts into their art making. There will be lectures and demonstrations covering mould making, form building, pattern making, wax working and other plastic materials. The traditional processes of lost wax casting and sand casting in metal will also be covered.
