Description:
Textiles and soft sculpture have shifted from the margins of craft into the center of contemporary art. This course examines the transformation of the field over the last 50 years, tracing how artists have used fiber and soft materials to engage feminism, queer liberation, regional identity, labor, and the politics of material culture.Moving beyond traditional definitions of weaving and quilting, we will consider how textile strategies—installation, soft sculpture, performance, dye, and hybrid media—have reshaped contemporary practice. The course includes gallery visits and conversations with artists and curators working across disciplines. Open to textile, sculpture, and interdisciplinary students, this class offers tools for analyzing material, form, and context while situating studio practice within broader cultural and political histories.
