Description:
Sculpture workshops are critique-based studio courses that investigate interdisciplinary topics proposed by faculty based on their fieldwork, experience, and expertise. Emphasis is on developing each student's individualized research and expanding their studio practice to consider broader concerns, methods, and contexts.Casting covers a wide breadth of mediums, processes and concepts. The word expanded is used to portray the range of casting from traditional to contemporary conceptual ideas, both physical and non-physical. The field of casting encompasses time, movement, imprinting, shape alteration, repetition and the transition of one material to another. It can be solid, liquid or somewhere in between. This course will offer a practical overview of the principal techniques required to realize cast forms in glass, metal, wax, and non-traditional media. There will be lectures and demonstrations covering mould making, form building, pattern making, wax working and other plastic materials. The traditional processes of lost wax casting and sand casting in metal will also be covered. The course will include the making of multi-piece plaster and silicone rubber molds used in the reproduction of forms, the lost wax process, and the various refractory molds used for casting these forms in glass. Hybrid course sections will be delivered both online and in-person. Required online synchronous meeting times are listed as the meeting pattern for this course section. Additional course components will be delivered asynchronously or in-person as outlined in the syllabus.
