Description:
We will examine the social construction of sexuality and investigate the ways in which sexuality is connected to power and inequality. What do we mean when we talk about "sexuality"? What does sexuality have to do with sex? Are we talking about relationships, genders, aesthetics, or acts? What role does biology, politics, race, class, nationality, morality, and religion play? How do these themes relate to hormones, consent, and pleasure? Addressing these questions reveals that sexualities vary enormously across time and place. We will explore these questions to gain a more nuanced understanding of sexuality. The course will use an interdisciplinary approach that engages perspectives in social science, humanities, and cultural studies.VERY IMPORTANT: Sexually explicit words and images are absolutely essential to this course. Be prepared to talk and listen about sex in ways that may be unfamiliar and may awaken strong reactions.
