Description:
Landscape encompasses humanity’s shaping of nature into culture (buildings, roads, infrastructure, places) as well as its representation of that activity. We examine landscape through many of the artistic practices taught at the college: painting, architecture, photography, film, sculpture, and writing. We discuss landscape as well through the terms of geology and geography, the effects of light and space as well as new materials and technologies, the political economy and human prejudice. Readings will largely be essayistic in nature and students will undertake oral and written projects on aspects of landscape.
