Description:
"The world," writes Alexis Wright, "desperately needs powerful storytellers to help us make sense of the unfathomable events taking place." In this multi-genre seminar, we’ll consider the possibilities and limitations of bearing witness to contemporary social and political issues through writing. What practices can heighten our abilities to see and observe the world around us? What research methods can we draw on to hone and amplify our creativity and visions as writers? To what extent, if any, can we appropriate other people’s experiences in the name of art or the greater good? In addition to reading a mix of memoirs, novels, and essays, including works by Luis Alberto Urrea, Roxanne Gay, and Colson Whitehead, you’ll develop your own craft by producing and sharing creative responses to the issues that most inspire and animate your own writing.
