Description:

Communication Skills - EL [English Learner] (WRLIT-098) addresses the needs of non-native speakers of English in the areas of college-level speaking fluency and listening comprehension. Class time includes the study and practice of formal and informal spoken English, with attention to the pronunciation of individual sounds, word stress, and sentence intonation. Lectures, videos, and guest speakers on topics related to art, literature, and American culture foster student listening comprehension skills, while activities such as role-play, discussions, critiques, debates, and presentations help students to gain confidence in speaking. Communication Skills-EL (WRLIT-098) is paired with Writing Skills Workshop-EL (WRLIT-097) and students enrolled in these paired courses are required to take the "paired sections" of these two courses which meet back-to-back with the same instructor. This means that students must be enrolled in sections of WRLIT-097 and WRLIT-098 that have the same section number, which is the final two digit number in the course. An example of paired sections of these two courses is WRLIT-097-03 and WRLIT-098-03 because they are both section "03."
