From Lord of the Rings, to Harry Potter, to Game of Thrones and the Witcher, to countless videogames, graphic novels and TV shows, Fantasy has never been more popular. Is Fantasy just a means to avoid dealing with the actual world and actual problems by focusing instead on elves, magic and swords, or can the literature of the fantastic speak to (and even critique) the "real" world? In this class we'll look at works of fantasy in a variety of media and from across many cultures and time periods, focusing on short stories, film and comics. We'll go far beyond the imaginary medieval into places both weirder and more familiar as we explore what happens when imagination leaves the shores of the real and explores the fantastic and the unknown.
