Description:

Indigeneity is a useful framework for better understanding how indigenous or native peoples have survived colonialism. Seeing the Indigenous honors the original inhabitants of the United States through an interdisciplinary analysis of indigenous cultural productions. We will study their history, politics, literature, performance, visual art, photography, and film. By focusing our lens on the suffering, survival, dignity, and complexity of indigenous peoples, we challenge harmful erasures and dehumanizing stereotypes that permeate history books and Hollywood films. By investigating colonialism in the Americas through the experience of indigenous peoples, we flip the script on the standard narration. This Writing 2 workshop continues the gains of Writing 1 by strengthening the ability to write, read, and discuss college-level texts. Students develop argumentation skills by writing shorter and longer essays, engaging in conversations in class, and delivering an oral presentation. Students also develop their voice through memoir as they write from life experience. Writing 2 continues the work begun in Writing 1 on strengthening students' ability to write, read and discuss at the college level, with emphasis on literary and visual analysis, and research and argumentation skills. The course will revolve around a specific theme selected by the instructor.
