Description:
In this class we will explore the art and craft of writing fiction. Students will put stories or novel chapters up in workshop, and be asked to critique each others efforts. In addition we will read the work of such writers as David Mitchell, Alice Munro, Wells Tower, Flannery O'Conner, and others, and will discuss the ways in which these writers move us on the page. There will be in and out of class exercises designed to hone our understanding of craft and sharpen our writing skills. Students will be asked to read their work aloud in class, and to participate in rigorous and constructive conversations about the act of writing. We will also try and have a lot of fun along the way.
