Description:

This class will help you tap into and develop the natural human tendency to tell stories. Through reading assignments and exercises, you will work on cultivating the skills necessary to writing successful fiction, including creating character, dialogue, voice, setting, scene, plot, and emotional resonance. Over the course of the semester, you will respond to writing prompts to help unleash your creativity and will work toward writing and revising several short stories. Weekly reading assignments will introduce the wide range of voices and approaches found in 20th and 21st century American short fiction. Additionally, articles on the craft of writing will illuminate how stories are designed, crafted, and polished.
