Family, ethnicity, race, social class, sexual orientation, and other identity markers offer a rich source of material for generating powerful stories. This class will explore how identity of different types can be used to create writing that is both thought-provoking and meaningful. Classes will include fiction and non-fiction reading assignments on the subject of identity, as well as creative writing prompts. The work of modern masters such as Richard Wright, Maya Angelou, Ocean Vuong, Yiyun Li and others will be explored for meaning and for insights into how to craft powerful stories.
