COURSE DESCRIPTIONWhile the general public has only recently accepted graphic literature as a mature artistic medium, the comic book has a long history of innovation and cultural significance. This course will focus on the development of the modern comic book and how the graphic novel has emerged as an important voice within contemporary literature. The course offers the opportunity to examine the evolution, subject matter, form, conventions, possibilities, and the future of comics through assigned readings, lecture, and discussion. Students will be asked to demonstrate their understanding of the medium through both traditional academic papers as well as projects that will take on the comic book form. Reading selections will be culled from both classic and modern comic books, graphic novels, manga, bandes dessinees, on-line hypercomics, and other related graphic texts, which may or may not be primarily narrative.
