Senior Installation Planning FAQ

What are my responsibilities?

Seniors are responsible for preparation, installation, removal of all their work from the galleries, and media reservations. The college will not reimburse you for money spent on any aspect of your installation. You are also responsible for the safe and secure installation of your work. CCA does not insure student work. Your installation must have some form of signage that includes your name.

I am unhappy with my installation date and or/ my gallery assignment. Can I switch spaces with someone?

The Exhibitions staff will not facilitate any space trading and it is up to the student to pursue this if desired. Trading spaces is allowed as long as all parties involved agree to it, and submit their request in writing to exhibitions@cca.edu. Be sure to inform the Gallery Manager and the Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs once the trading of spaces has been agreed upon and confirmed because you will need to fill out a new Installation Agreement form. If you do not plan to use your space at all, please inform the Exhibitions staff immediately. You may not give your assigned space to a friend, as there is a waitlist for spaces.

Where can I find Exhibitions Department information on Portal?

The Exhibitions portal page contains links to floor plans and handbooks, plus a list of exhibition opportunities and documentation of past exhibitions.

Can I have extra time to install my work?

No. Plan on completing the installation in the designated window of time.

How large are the gallery doors?

Make sure what you are making will fit through the gallery’s front door (the CCA Hubbell Street Galleries have doors that are roughly 41” W x 95” H; the Oliver Art Center has a large roll-up garage door).

Can I paint on the walls?

No! Due to the limited amount of time for deinstall, painting on the walls is forbidden.

Can I have fire/open flames in my installation?

No! Due to fire, health, and safety codes we cannot allow any form of flames within the galleries. This includes candles.

Can I use scents?

If you plan on including scents or materials that give off strong odors in your installation, they must be contained so that interaction with them is optional (bell jars are one possible option for this). Many people have sensitivities or allergies to smells and you need to be considerate to both visitors and your neighboring exhibitors.

What other materials might pose health or safety issues?

Please refer to the Facilities Department's Exhibition and Installation guidelines for a list of hazardous materials.

Special note for those who deal with images that may be considered as provocative or sensitive:

People of all ages, cultural backgrounds, and opinions visit CCA's galleries. If you have work that may be deemed inappropriate for young people or if your work has sexual, graphic, verbal (swear words/racially provocative language), or violent content, please notify the Exhibitions staff ahead of time so we can work with you to determine the best way to notify/inform visitors before they view or interact with your work.

Do you provide tables?

Yes. We have plenty of plastic folding tables that you can use for install, deinstall, etc.

I need a large number of pedestals for my installation. Do you have more?

The Exhibitions department has a limited number of pedestals that are shared across the various galleries/campuses. It is possible that we will not have the number or sizes of pedestals that your work requires. It is up to the student to determine what they will need in advance and contact the Exhibitions staff to make reservations for pedestals.

Pedestals are for exhibitions in the campus galleries only. They are not to be taken off campus for any reason, and they cannot be borrowed for critiques.

Do I need to secure media?

The media center and exhibitions department have materials to secure media that you should request when you pick it up. You are responsible for providing your own locks if using media within these spaces as keys often go missing.

Do I need an artist statement, signage, and labels?

Yes! Your Senior Projects professor may require you to include an artist statement in your installation space. Even if they do not, we encourage you to write one up. At a minimum, please create signage that identifies your exhibition. This can take the form of vinyl wall text, a poster, or print-outs. CCA has vinyl cutters in the SF shops. FastSigns is also a great resource in both Oakland and San Francisco for quick vinyl printing: http://www.fsfastsigns.com/. Martin Sign Co., https://martinsignco.com/, is another good resource located in Bayview.

If your work exists under one unifying title, labels are not required, but if each work has its own individual title, it is recommended that these are either printed on wall labels and attached to the wall (address labels make great wall labels), or that a gallery guide/map is printed for the front desk area, or for a shelf or pedestal within your designated gallery space. We also recommend that you print some form of document that has your contact information on it (e.g. postcards, business cards, a takeaway). Make sure to include the email address that you will be using after graduation.

When should I document my installation?

You should arrange for the documentation of your installation to take place as soon as it is installed. This gives you time to upload your images, review/edit them, and return to the gallery and take more images if needed. Do not plan to photograph your work during your deinstall window!

The Exhibitions Department takes installation images of each exhibition, but is not responsible for the documentation of individual artworks. These images can be accessed and downloaded from the Exhibitions Flickr Page.

Can CCA use my work for promotional material?

Yes. Per the CCA Student Handbook, CCA has permission to use images of student work for promotional purposes. If you have any questions or concerns about this please get in touch with the Communications office at communications@cca.edu.

Receptions

Can I have a reception or event within the gallery?

No. In fall 2021, we are unable to host opening receptions and other gatherings, or serve food and drink inside the galleries, due to current health/safety guidelines.

May I play amplified sound, use mics/speakers for a performance, or invite a musician/DJ to provide music within my gallery space?

All plans for music or amplified sound within the Oliver Art Center and CCA Hubbell Street Galleries need to be cleared with the Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs at least a week in advance of your exhibition. You can do so by emailing exhibitions@cca.edu.

It is also important to take your fellow exhibiting artists into consideration when presenting an artwork with sound, and/or playing sound at your reception; please inform them of any plans to use sound. We recommend hooking headphones up to artwork that makes use of sound or music.

Please refer to the Facilities Department's Exhibition and Installation Guidelines (section C, article 8) for further information.
